Communities In Action: Daphne Evans, “The Cancer Diva"

Good Morning! I’ve lost four family members to breast cancer and know of quite a few people who are battling some form of cancer. When I read about “The Cancer Diva” in the September’s issue of Ebony Magazine, it was very important for me to share what she’s doing. She’s a THREE time cancer survivor who wants to help other female cancer survivors feel good during this traumatic time.

Please meet “The Cancer Diva,” Daphne Evans!

Ms. Evans is Founder and CEO of Heaven’s Door Cancer Foundation. In 2011, she was a CFO start-up advisor to various companies in the Bay Area and around the country including: Les Petit Chefs, Inc., a culinary academy for children; FENIX, LLC, a culinary academy and training center for first time offenders working with the Concordia Argonaut Club. She was also CFO start-up advisor for Northman Grove Settlement in Ohio, a classical arts academy for children. Currently she is also manager of Scott Law Firm, a civil rights firm in San Francisco. Daphne has been a former Manager and Controller Consultant to law firms and eCommerce corporations for nearly 20 years. She is an Ovarian, Papillary Breast Carcinoma and recently Metastatic Spinal Carcinoma survivor; fundraiser, public speaker, philanthropist. Nominated for Woman of the Year by Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Member of Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, The Canary Foundation, A-List Organization, Italian Make A Wish Foundation and Society for Oncology Massage. Board of Directors Member of Springfield Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Founder of Evans Relief Foundation.

Heaven’s Door Cancer Foundation

At 35 years old, Daphne was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and underwent surgery to remove the meta-sized cancer, ovaries and uterus. During the recovery process, she and her husband divorced after five years of marriage. In need of a change, Daphne relocated to another city to start life over. After settling into her new life and starting a new career, she decided she wanted to have a breast reduction. Before having the procedure, she visited her doctor and found out she had a left mass on her left breast! Unfortunately, it was breast cancer and a mastectomy was needed. Instead of giving up on herself and being depressed, she decided to visit a spa for much-needed pampering. The experience was so great, she returned every day for a week.  She began to feel beautiful and upbeat again and wanted others to experience the pampering she received at the spa. Therefore, she began Heaven’s Door Cancer Foundation, a charity that provides female cancer survivors, aka Cancer Divas, with free spa services. Daphne encourages her Cancer Divas to celebrate life in the now! In 2009, Daphne was diagnosed with spinal cancer but she is now in remission.

(Springfield, MO) -- How would you like a free massage, pedicure or manicure? That's what some Springfield ladies will be getting, thanks to the help of a new organization for recovering cancer patients.

The idea behind it is to help women recovering from cancer feel a little bit more like themselves again. "I've survived breast cancer and ovarian cancer and now I have a kind of cancer in my spine," said Daphne Evans. "I'm what they call a triple threat," said Evans.

In addition to fighting off cancer, Daphne has also made it her mission to help other women avoid a painful recovery. "It's just so hard to go home by yourself. I know when i had my double mastectomy I just looked at myself in the mirror and cried," said Daphne.

She started Heaven's Door. It's a place where women recovering from cancer can stay for a short time. They can also get free massages and pedicures, try on wigs and get support from other women. "I call it Diva Aftercare," said Daphne.

April Kendall had a double mastectomy three weeks ago. She calls Heaven's Door, a life saver. "We feel so alone sometimes and so insecure with everything that's happening," said April.

Nearly 20 people have volunteered their time to make this project happen. That includes two massage therapists, two interior designers and 12 Missouri State students. "We wanted a place where women could have a relaxed experience after going from a hospital which is so cold and sterile," said Interior Designer Julie Wade.
Jennifer Roberts is one of the licensed massage therapists who is volunteering her time. She specializes in giving women a special kind of massage that can reduce their swelling and pain after surgery. "It's a great cause. I guess it's just something that's needed and a lot of women can't afford to have done," said Roberts.

April knows she can never pay Daphne back for what she's doing, but she's going to try to pay it forward. Anybody who's going through what I'm going through, I'm going to be there for them and help them out," said April.

Eventually Heaven's Door will also include a spa on Primrose street in Springfield, but Daphne is still waiting to get the zoning approved for that project.
